An overview of the shows in Paris - October 2005

MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2005

All of the artists participating in the exchange - from Paris, San Francisco and Chicago - were welcomed with a group party at the Paris studio of Jean-Robert Franco (host to Catherine Small of San Francisco). He has an amazing space! At the party the American artists who had arrived in Paris already met the French host artists, and there was wine and food and much merriment – plus an announcement of some of the week’s events from Le Genie’s president, Danielle Loisel.

The next couple of days the American artists were hanging their work in the studios of the Paris host artists. We also got in some time to visit around Paris. Some people went to museums and galleries and other art-related sites. As usual, there was a lot going on: fiac, the Musee D’Orsay, DADA at the Pompidou, etc. etc.

Inauguration! All the artists and their guests were officially welcomed and feted with champagne and such in the elegant Mairie of the 11th arrondissement, or city hall of the 11th district/neighborhood of Paris, in which the Bastille takes place. We were welcomed by Georges Serra, the Mayor of the 11th arrondissement and his officials; the Chicago artists had a statement of thanks and the mayor’s assistant for cultural affairs read a letter from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Guests were also treated to a film made at the previous year’s festivities for Le Génie de la Bastille’s 20th anniversary. There were many official photos taken in the imposing stairwell of the building - those will be posted when we have them - and many others by the enthusiatic artists.

After the welcoming reception, a large group of American and French artists ventured to the rue Keller for a couscous dinner at Café Moderne. We got to know each other a little better over some wine and a wonderful meal.
